MODERN-DAY FASHION ICONS

MY MODERN-DAY FASHION museS

Fashion is always changing, so my idea of a fashion icon is someone who has a decidedly ‘me’ look to anything they wear. When it comes to style, there are few people I admire more than the 7 women you’ll read about in today’s blog post. The one thing each woman has in common is their ability to go from casual street style to red carpet glam with a definite identity unique to them, and that’s not a simple task (not that I have any red carpet styling experience, ha!).

THE WOMEN

From top left: Meghan Markle, Dakota Johnson, Shay Mitchell, Priyanka Chopra, Kate Bosworth, Lily Aldridge, Rosie Huntington-Whitely

THE WHY

meghan markle

Meghan Markle is probably on everyone’s fashion icon list, so I’ll start on common ground. First of all, have we all seen Suits? Because Rachel Zane (Markle) was one of my favorite characters, right behind Donna (also a fashion maven) and Louis who tied for first. Although Meghan has been on the fashion radar for a long time, her look evolved upon entering the royal spotlight. She is a monochrome master (if you haven’t read about my appreciation for a good monochrome outfit, click here), so it goes without saying her style holds a special place in my heart. She also mixes in affordable with luxury, which is admirable considering her position in society. Just goes to show you that every girl loves a steal, even the royal ones among us.

DAKOTA JOHNSON

Dakota materialized into 2 worlds simultaneously: the 50 Shades scene, and the fashion scene. She pulls off workwear off-duty as well as she does her endless Gucci red carpet ensembles, looking effortlessly glamorous either way.

SHAY MITCHELL

Shay almost has 2 fashion personalities: ultra-polished and boho-chic. The 2 distinct styles have 1 thing in common: she does them both WELL. Can you say #goals? She also rocks slicked-back hair styles, up or down, the way we all wish we could but can’t quite pull it off. Must be her incredible bone structure, or one of many other qualities that make her a recognized fashion & beauty favorite.

PRIYANKA CHOPRA

The first time I ever saw a photo of Priyanka was of her in a white lace Zuhair Murad gown, and it fundamentally sealed my future wedding dress’s fate. Does that tell you how much of a fashion influence she’s had over me? Another question for you – her glam looks are enough to make anyone green with envy, but her off duty looks are just as good. How is that even possible? Priyanka and Jo Bros hubby Nick together make one of the most fashionable couples of our time, so there was no way she didn’t make it onto my list of fashion icons.

Kate bosworth

Out of the entire line up, Kate Bosworth is the one I have looked towards for fashion tips the longest. She’s not afraid of bright colors or patterns, or of mixing the two, and she rocks even the most ornate pieces like nobody’s business. She has gorgeous fair skin, which I can appreciate having fair skin myself, and yet still glows.

LILY ALDRIDGE

Lily Aldridge has somehow mastered wearing some of the most striking looks without ever looking overdone. She always looks completely in her element, whether she’s wearing a gown for a red carpet event, or overalls, a white long-sleeve and heels in the airport. She’s one of those California girls that can pull off barely-there makeup and woke-up-like-this hair and still rock a paparazzi photo, and that’s a superpower.

ROSIE HUNTINGTON-WHITELY

I have talked about RHW before, heck, my recent OOTD post was inspired by her Instagram, so you already know I take notes when she shares her fashion looks. Rosie’s unique position in the fashion & beauty world, both model and entrepreneur, give her premiere access to new trends, but her wardrobe is still rooted in the basics largely in a neutral palette. I love the simple jewelry and accessories she pairs with her outfits, and similar to the other women I’ve touched on, she nails the effortlessly chic look, with a (big) dash of elegance.

Honorable mention goes to 2 fictional characters – Serena van der Woodsen, played by the one and only Blake Lively in Gossip Girl, and Fallon Carrington played by Liz Gillies in the Dynasty reboot, both of which are among my favorite shows and happen to be jam-packed with enviable fashion.

Whose style do you take inspiration from?
